I am helping someone with their Dell Inspiron N5050, which has Windows 10 installed on it. The computer will boot up, but I only get a black screen. I did find, that if I closed the lid, reopened, and press the power button, I will get the login screen, and can use Windows 10 normally. However, you have to repeat this process every time. Decent Productivity Machine - Weak Intel GraphicsThe system is typically very quiet. The fan is often audible, but just barely. Even when playing back video, which is probably the most taxing thing that I’ve done with this laptop, the fan doesn’t spin very fast. My son has used it to play some games and it spins up more then, but there are problems with gaming (see cons).
This laptop is more durable than I expected it to be. When I first opened it up, the keyboard gave me pause because it seemed very bouncy. Every strike of the keyboard seemed to make the system rattle, so I was glad I had also purchased a 1-year protection plan. But even though the boy dropped a few times, the laptop is still going strong. He did damage one of the USB ports, but just this weekend I learned the replacement part for this repair is less than $10 and I can perform the repair myself.

Cons: The screen resolution is not as good as I expected. The monitor resolution is not as good as I hoped. The monitor display’s native resolution is 1366 x 768, and those 768 pixels don’t seem that clean. This machine plays 720P video clean and with no problems, but it just doesn’t have that high-quality “pop” one expects from HD video.
My son has tried to use this laptop for more games than I expected, and more demanding games than it was ever intended. The Intel HD Graphics 3000 are graphics integrated onto the CPU chip. These graphics can seem powerful because they often have the power to drive multiple displays and playback HD video, but games are incredibly demanding. No one should purchase this laptop with the expectation of playing any games other than solitaire; the graphics just don’t have the power for it. Instead, look for something with a second graphics chip/card and be prepared to pay more for it.
Although the construction seems solid based on the abuse this system has had so far, I really don’t like the way it’s put together. To access either the RAM or the hard disk requires removing the keyboard. The RAM is accessible after lifting the keyboard and nothing else. Replacing the hard drive requires complete disassembly of the laptop, something I’ve never seen before. On the other hand, the instructions on how to disassemble and reassemble the laptop provided by Dell are detailed and thorough to the point anyone with the right tools can perform major surgery on this laptop.
The OEM-installed 500 GB hard drive did fail, possibly because of abuse but that’s irrelevant at this point. Because the hard drive is less than 3 years old, I thought I would be able to file a warranty claim. Seagate tells me I have to go through the OEM (Dell), and Dell tells me the laptop is out of warranty, so it appears I’m out of luck in that department. Seagate’s reliability is taking a beating lately, so this is worth considering. Not all of these computers will have a Seagate hard drive, though.

Overall Review: After I first set up the laptop, I upgraded the RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB because I had the extra RAM available from a previous upgrade. I expected to see some measurable performance increase, but the benchmarks showed no real improvement, nor did my own experience. This isn’t completely unexpected as 4 GB is more than enough for most applications, but as applications become more demanding over the next couple of years the extra RAM may be more useful.
This is a good machine for productivity purposes, but is completely unsuited for gaming purposes.
This machine is deceptively sturdy and capable of taking a beating.

Ownership: 1 month to 1 year

Pros: the laptop is plenty fast, and works with ubutnu 12.04. Even with the Linux driver witch is currently only 50% the speed of the windows driver, the computer has no problems with the tasks I need it to do.

Cons: None

Overall Review: It wont play high end games, but other than that it will do everything, you will need it to. plus it cost 1/3 the price of a gaming laptop.
of its better in every way than the xps m1530 it is replacing. Including graphics.

Performance would be good if the quality was there

Pre-requisite Task

When making significant changes to your computer such as updating the operating system, you should always backup. See links to resources about backing up by clicking the link for the respective version of Windows you are running: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1

  • How to manually backup and restore your files

then

  • How to: upgrade from previous versions of Windows using Windows 10 ISO file

also

  • Disable (preferrably uninstall) your Antivirus utility before attempting the upgrade.
  • Restart a few times then try again.
  • Disable General USB Devices (example - Smart Card Reader).
  • If you are using a SCSI hard disk, make sure you have drivers available for your storage device on a thumdrive and it is connected. During Windows 10 setup, click the Custom Advanced Option and use the Load Driver command to load the appropriate driver for the SCSI drive. If this does not work and setup still fails, consider switching to a IDE based hard disk.
  • Perform a clean boot, restart then try again.
  • If you are upgrading using the .ISO file, disconnect from the Internet during setup, if you are connected by LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi, disable both then attempt setup again.
  • If you are updating through Windows Update, when the download reaches 100% disconnect from the Internet LAN (Ethernet) or Wi-Fi then proceed with the installation.
  • If that does not work, try using the .ISO file to upgrade if possible.
  • If you are connected to a domain, switch to a local account.
  • If you have any external devices attached to the machine, disconnect them (example, gaming controllers, USB keys, external hard disk, printers, non-essential devices).

If Windows crashes, because of bad drivers or any other reason, during the upgrade process we’ll fail the upgrade and restore your previous operating system. On the upgrade progress screen you'll see three steps listed along the bottom 'Copying files,' 'Installing features and drivers', and 'Configuring settings.'

During 'Copying files', we actually boot into a minimal version of Windows and copy important files and drivers from the old operating system into the new one. If we fail in this first stage you’ll see an error code in the Windows Update control panel called c1900101 x200xx. For example, 20017 means we couldn’t even boot into this operating system and usually points to bad storage drivers.

The 'Installing features and drivers' phase is the trickiest part of upgrade. If you see a failure c1900101 x300xx, it means we failed during this phase. The most common failure is x30018, which generally means a driver crashed when we loaded it for the first time. Any driver could cause the failure, but it may not crash 100 percent of the time. If you try again, it may just work.

Dell Inspiron N5050 Windows 10 Update

'Configuring settings' is the final phase and failures codes look like c1900101 x400xx. The most common failure here is 40017, which means we failed to boot. Since this is the first time we boot into Windows 10 with all of the drivers in place, again, drivers are usually the cause of the crash. These issues tend to be less transient than the 30018s, so a second try is less likely to solve the issue. Still, it never hurts to try.

If you do encounter any of these issues, be sure the PC is opted into the Microsoft Customer Experience Improvement Program. This enables Windows to send data back to our team so we can identify what’s causing the failures. If there are issues we work hard to address them ourselves, or we reach out to companies who own the driver or software. We, then, work together on solutions.
