Animating text layers is useful for many purposes, including animated titles, lower thirds, credit rolls, and dynamic typography. As with other layers in After Effects, you can animate entire text layers. However, text layers offer additional animation features with which you can animate the text.

In this video tutorial, learn how to create a customized animated stroke effect in After Effects for your next video production project.

When it comes to working with text, the stroke can be a powerful design element. Adobe After Effects has a number of tools that allow you to quickly add and modify a text stroke. These tools, however, are often lacking something. The Character panel gives you color, width, and positioning options, but not much else. Animating attributes of a stroke can be a bit more complex, so let’s take a closer look at a unique method that will bring a text stroke to life in just a few simple steps.

Step 1: Create the Text Layer

For the first step, I will create some text. I can use the Type tool and start typing, or I can highlight the Timeline panel and select Layer > New > Text. An After Effects text layer is a simple vector file, meaning the layer will continuously rasterize as I change the scale or font size. This will preserve the sharp edges of my text no matter how many adjustments I make.

Step 2: Convert to Shapes

Next, I will convert my text to shapes. While After Effects has a lot of tools for text, shape layers provide a bit more versatility. By converting my text to shape layers, I’ll open up a number of animation features that weren’t previously available. To create my shapes, I’ll grab the text layer and select Layer > Create Shapes from Text. You can tell the difference between Shapes and Text layers via the symbol next to the layer’s name in the Timeline panel. Shapes have a star, while text layers have a T.

Step 3: Add the Stroke

My new shape layer contains every letter as an individual shape element, each with its own path, stroke, fill, and transform properties. While all of the letters have their own stroke attribute, I want to control all of them at the same time. To do this, I need to add a new stroke attribute. I’ll go to the Add button and select Stroke. This adds a new stroke that applies to the entire word. Since I’m just creating an isolated animated stroke, I’ll turn off the fill property for each letter.

Step 4: Animate

It’s time to bring the stroke to life. The new stroke attribute contains a number of keyframable properties, including color, opacity, width, and a handful of others. However, I just want to animate the path of the stroke in and out. To do this, I’ll add a Trim Paths attribute via the Add button in the Timeline panel. This is a powerful tool that provides me with a keyframable range selector. Once applied, I can animate the Start, End, and Offset properties of the stroke path for some cool results.

Step 5: Customize Design

In addition to fine-tuning the animation, I can adjust a plethora of stroke attributes to customize the design, including color and width. Changing the stroke cap and joints can give me a smoother and curvier look. I can even change the stroke to dashes and keyframe the offset property of the dashes to bring them to life. Be careful here, though, as the multitude of choices can lead to way too much fun in After Effects . . .

Presets play an important role in shortening your work cycles and standardizing effects across projects and compositions. One of the advantages of using Adobe After Effects CC in your editing workflow is the availability of a large number of effects and animation presets on the web, which you can instantly download and integrate into the Effects & Presets panel in After Effects. If you happen to create and apply the same set of effects repeatedly for your projects, you must consider creating a preset to save time and effort. In this post, we look at how you can download, use, create, edit, and share After Effects presets.

Presets in After Effects CC

Effect presets in After Effects CC make it easy to share a set of parameter adjustments that you have made in an effect across projects and compositions. After Effects provides you a number of presets out of the box in the Effects & Presets panel, and there are numerous presets that After Effects users sell or share for free on the web.

Animation presets help you save and reuse specific configurations of layer properties and animations, including keyframes, effects, and expressions. For example, if you created an explosion using several effects with complex property settings, keyframes, and expressions, you can save all of those settings as a single animation preset. You can then apply that animation preset to any other layer.

You can find effect presets as .ffx files in the Presets directory (Program FilesAdobeAdobe After Effects CC x.xSupport Files on Windows and Documents/Adobe/After Effects CC x.x/ on Mac OS).

Download and install presets

Adobe After Effects Text Animation Templates

A wide variety of After Effects presets are available for download. You can download these presets from websites such as AE Enhancers, Video Copilot, and Share AE (and of course a number of other providers who provide cool presets, plugins, and templates for After Effects) and save them in a separate folder in the Presets directory at the After Effects install location on your computer. The folder that you create under Presets appears in the Effects & Presets panel after you refresh the panel (click Refresh List in the Effects panel menu) or restart After Effects. In the image, you can see a directory named My Custom Presets, which has a number of presets in it. It was a directory that I created for saving the free presets that I downloaded from the web.

To apply an effect or animation preset to a single layer, drag the effect or animation preset from the Effects & Presets panel to a layer in the Timeline, Composition, or Effect Controls panel.

When you drag an effect or animation preset onto a layer in the Composition panel, the name of the layer under the pointer is shown in the Info panel. If you have not selected a layer, double-clicking an animation preset will create a new layer and apply the preset to the layer.

You can apply an effect or animation preset in a number of ways:

  • To apply an effect or animation preset to one or more layers, select the layers, and then double-click the effect or animation preset in the Effects & Presets panel.
  • To apply an effect to one or more layers, select the layers and then choose Effect > [category] >[effect].
  • To apply a recently used or saved animation preset to one or more layers, select the layers, choose Animation > Recent Animation Presets and then choose the animation preset from the list.
  • To apply the most recently applied animation preset to one or more layers, select the layers and then press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift+F (Mac OS).
  • To apply the most recently applied effect to one or more layers, select the layers and then press Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E (Windows) or Command+Option+Shift+E (Mac OS).
  • To apply an animation preset to one or more layers using Adobe Bridge, select the layers, choose Animation > Browse Presets, navigate to the animation preset, and then double-click it.
  • To apply the effect settings from an animation preset to the current instance of an effect, choose the animation preset name from the Animation Presets menu for the effect in the Effect Controls panel.
  • To copy effects from one layer to one or more layers, select the effects in the Timeline panel or the Effect Controls panel, choose Edit > Copy, select the target layers, and choose Edit > Paste.
