CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The first episode of the new season of 'Hard Knocks' aired on Tuesday night on HBO. The show featured an inside look at the opening weeks of training camp.

Every week, I'll bring you award winners from the show, the top performers as judged by ... well ... me. Away we go:

Best performance in a lead role: Hue Jackson and Jarvis Landry

This was a difficult category to choose just one, so we have a split vote. Landry, as expected, was a star and he blew past those expectations. His 'Bless'm' (that's how he tweeted it) will be the word of the show. His speech to the wide receiver room was a swear-filled, culture-changing type of moment.

The season of Hard Knocks is now in the books, and as final episodes usually do, this one hit hard. We saw a lot of quality players with great personal stories cut. There were certainly some. Here is a recap of episode two of the HBO Sports and NFL Films documentary Hard Knocks 'Training Camp with the Cleveland Browns.'

As for Jackson, every side of who he is was on display. His sense of humor with the team was evident. His authority in the coaches' meeting about players taking days off was telling.

As an aside, because I don't want to be flippant about it, seeing the emotion from Jackson as he dealt with the deaths of his mother and brother was heart-wrenching. It was the type of emotion we don't normally see and, honestly, it's a little unfair that he had to go through that with cameras in all corners of his office.

Best performance in a comedic role: Carl Nassib

Honorable mention: Baker Mayfield

This one was a bit of a surprise. Nassib took the show by storm with his lecture about compound interest to the defensive line room. He made me re-evaluate my life by pointing out how long spending two hours a day on Instagram really is and he punctuated a segment on Jarvis Landry with the comment, 'Jarvis is really f*cking good.'

Mayfield peppered the episode with a dry sense of humor. We got to see the RV get delivered and we found out that he didn't know Bob Evans was a chain.

Best performance in a supporting role: Todd Haley

Haley wasn't shy about voicing his displeasure about certain players getting days off during a meeting. It was one of the more tense moments and a moment where Jackson had to assert his authority.

Most surprising moment: Haley and Freddie Kitchens on those days off

I'll be honest, when I saw this come up on Twitter a few days ago, I thought it was just people on Twitter needing to be mad at Hue Jackson about something. Haley and Kitchens, though, echoed some of those sentiments.

This, however, is one area where Jackson has embraced the smarter, more analytical approach. In the battle between old-school football guys and a new-school approach, Jackson is on the new school side.

Surprise performance: Brogan Roback

Roback came out of nowhere to give us a tour of the quarterback RV and tell us about the snacking needs and how important the presentation is in the process. He took some heat from Drew Stanton for it, but Roback came out of nowhere and delivered.
